Several birders visiting Norway, have asked me when and where to see Siberian Jay?
I can just say “unpredictable”. Norwegian birders often say “this bird appears when you don’t except it”. I have had several experiences with Siberian Jay, but it seems that the best period to enjoy the curiosity of this familiar bird is around mid June, when adultes feed youngs. Calls are also helpful to dicerne them. However, outside the breeding season, Siberian Jay are quite silent and difficult to see, flying low in the forest, feeding on the ground. Some places are excellent for this species for example the area Femund. July may also give good opportunity to enjoy this mystic bird.
The video shows a family group, four youngs easy to separate from the adult with a more pale brownish forehead. Calls can be heard.
