Seen easiest on roadside Verbena flowers opposite the entrance of Canopy Lodge, El Valle. Other species encountered here were single males Rufous-crested Coquette and Violet-headed Hummingbird, the agressive Rufous-tailed Hummingbird and a female White-necked Jacobin.

Slate-colored Seedeater

A bad video of a rare and localised species, always found in bamboo. This was one of 3 singing males encountered in 2 weeks (one at Rainforest Discovery Center trails, Gamboa, and this and another, more slate-colored (adult?) male at Metropolitan Park, Panama City (where a further 2-3 were only heard). According to local birders, the species has inexplicably increased over the past 6 months....

Poisonous, but small and with its fangs in the back of the mouth, this species is rather harmless. The only snake I encountered in Panama (twice).
