White-bellied Blue Robin - 2

Compared to the Nilgiri Blue Robin (Shortwing), that until recently was considered the same species, this bird is more slate-grey (instead of blue), it lacks the whitish lore and it has orangey chestsides and more white on the belly.

These tiny ants will eat anything they get their jaws on and so all living creatures run for their lives. Birds know that, and in different C & S American countries various birds specialise in attending these swarms to prey on insects and reptiles that are flushed by the ants. In Panama, these specialists include Grey-headed Tanager, Bicolored (of which you can hear the calls in the background) and Ocellated Antbird (see other videos).

With Yellow Canary, Red-billed Quelea, Southern Grey-headed & Cape Sparrow, Southern Masked Weaver, Scale-feathered Finch and Cape Glossy Starling. We drove to Nossob especially for this pretty finch, which is probably more common further east.
