This was our third visit to Brazil`s Pantanal. The difference being the majority of this time was to be spent on a 3 storey house boat that allowed you two safaris a day with the bonus of climbing into small narrow powered steel canoes everyday that that could instantly whisk you into prime territory. The idea was to concentrate on Wildlife photography not Bird listing but we still managed to accrue c190 species of bird at a leisurely place. The difference could be seen from our initial quiet days compared with the busier sightings in the Port Joffre region.

We managed 8 nights Full board on the Aguape riverboat which we picked up at Cacares,2.5 miles drive west of Cuiaba. We utilised Carlos Grandez Perez`s company http://www.pantanalecoexplorer.com.br/.

They were the most reasonable company and only one to offer a cruise, with good guides and boatmen they also arranged a day tour to try and see Harpy eagle 2hrs NW of Cuiaba at Poussada ranch. Carlos`s company is the only one that has a 9 day river cruise , down the Paraguay river then onto the Cuiaba river. The trip was better than expected and the fellow 11 other clients seemed to enjoy it .The food was excellent with our own air conditioned en suite cabins, not what I am used to. We were told there had been a drought but to me it was better in some areas than previous years. Next year the environ could be different weather and water wise, birding is all about luck!

Accommodation

Hotel Aero VIP, Cuiaba. A 10min walk from airport entrance, basic hotel clean with a good buffet breakfast. Stayed on night arrival at Cuiaba and last 3 nights `Aguape `, Riverboat we met it at Cacares and it took us to Port Joffre, Excellent food, good clean accommodation with power onboard. A four year old vessel.

Friday Sept 19th

We set off early from the North East of England to connect with the first flight at 0600 from Newcastle Airport that took us to Schiphol Airport. The hour here proved to be quite good seeing a few Common Buzzard, 2 Purple Heron and a flock of Egyptian geese. We then landed at Sao Paulo where we had to reclaim our luggage and then find our gate to recheck our luggage for the remaining flight to Cuiaba. This sounds simple but the Brazilian airport is very disorganised still readying itself for the World cup football finals which finished 2 months ago. After the 2 hour merry go round we took our flight to Cuiaba where we landed 2300 on time and were soon at our familiar hotel.

Saturday Sept 20th

Woke at 0630 and after a good basic breakfast off to meet the rest of the holiday naturalists leaving Cuiaba at 0900 for Cacares. A good road but with speed traps. Bird wise we had Toco Toucans, Guira cuckoos, Lesser yellow-headed vultures distinctly harrying over the fields, Yellow-rumped cacicque erupting across the roads. We reached Carcares at 1145 by the river Paraguay. The boat, Aguape, was immaculate and the support staff were well briefed for our embarkation. The basic bedrooms were clean and larger than similiar boats on the river plenty of room for 13 guests. Food was of local ingredients and extremely well cooked. A large air conditioned dining area and even a bar aft. Three tier river hotel. Set off at 1330 after lunch very hot and we were planning a late pm boat session but a thunderstorm came in at 1445 and we watched from top deck sheltered from the elements. It was terrific watching flocks of Skimmers over the water. Southern screamers calling from the top of riverside bushes. Aptly named Large billed and Yellow billed terns fishing with great success in the waters. At dusk as we continued south initially flocks of Nighthawks then Fishing bats. Evening meal at 1900, retiring to bed 2100

Sunday Sept 21st

We were to spend our day in the area around Descalvadino while the Aguape was moored up on the river Paraguay. Weather was fairly constant through the trip, 28c blue sky with very little cloud. After awakening at 0515, breakfast at 0600 then onto the narrow 40hp S.S. canoe boat with 5 others at 0630 exploring the narrow channels in the area. The first part of the morning catching up with the commoner water birds eg. Jacana , Neotropic cormorant, Black-capped Donocobius including migrating waders, Solitary & Spotted sandpipers. We then went onto the main river where it was slightly choppy and got a bit wet. Dry bags are very useful for camera gear. We had a break at 1045 where we saw Grey Monjita and White winged swallow. We also came across a large migrating flock of Cliff swallow. Back at 1200 for a rest and superb lunch. In the afternoon we went to a local ranch where there were many species of Parrot including the Worlds largest, Hyacinths macaw as well as 2 species of hummingbird. There was a very tame Jabiru stork at the pier then out onto more familiar channels that we had visited 2 yrs ago, finding 3 Giant otter under roots of the bank and obliging Capybara, herons and egrets abound we then headed back toward the boat on the main river to see a mixed nursery of Wood stork, Roseate spoonbill & egrets. What a sight! And we finally blazed across the river negotiating flocks of Nighthawks and Fishing bats till 1830 just in time for supper.

Monday Sept 22nd

Out on the Taiama reserve, exploring the narrow channels we found an active Bat falcon catching dragonflies. Amongst the Water hyacinth Unicoloured Blackbirds were active as well as the Donnacobius however we discovered a superb male Scarlet-headed blackbird putting a show for its mate & us. We then found by accident while trying to get close to riverside trees, a Boat billed heron daytime roost, chaos ensued. Also herewas Black howler monkey & there were 3 Capuchin monkeys. We got back at 1230 then out at 1400. The photographic conditions were perfect. Again it was the commoner water birds with photogenic Capybara and Yucare (cayman)

Tuesday Sept 23rd

Our day was now moored by the Acruzal reserve on the Bolivian border. We got up early and went and explored flooded reserve next to the hills. The area was like an inland sea at one time we could see water all the way to the horizon, occasionally there were small flocks of Black-bellied whistling duck. In the channels approaching the area we found another Bat falcon hawking dragonflies from the top of a Jabiru stork nest. Noisy Howler monkeys were the stars of the day disrupting the bird life of Rusty-winged flycatcher & Orange troupial. It was fascinating to draw up to ,in the boat 8000 yr old carvings on the lake side then a glorious ride back. The afternoon was a relaxing cruise down the Paraguay river then onto Cuiaba river. Admiring rafts of giant lily pads and seeing our first Yellow tufted woodpecker.

Wednesday Sept 24th

We were now moored at the junction of the Rio Negro and Cuiaba river .Our early morning safari cast off to be confronted immediately by 9 iguana sunning themselves on early morning sunshine spread eagled over a bush & across the river were 3 Giant otter fishing with two Ringed kingfisher, a good start to the day. We then ambled down the river to get views of Toucan, Chestnut-eared aracari, Chestnut bellied & Piping guans. However at 0900 I saw a giant splash some 200m ahead of me I continued to watch the area and then I realised in the water was a swimming Jaguar under overhanging vegetation. The large female climbed out but after a few minutes we realised there were 2 cubs stalking along the riverbank. Iguanas bolted in all directions as did a dozy Capybara. Eventually we saw one cub dive into the river catching an iguana eating it up a side channel from the river. The adrenaline still pumped through the veins sometime after the spectacle. We managed to see 2x Blue crowned trogons and flights of Parrots and Whistling duck over the river. Back for lunch then embarked down the river absorbing the sights from the top deck. In the evening we had torrential rain which gave us a slight problem with harmless flying termites.

Thursday Sept 25th

We had cruised during the night and awoke at the confluence of the 3 Brothers system of rivers near Port Joffre. Right in the middle of the best area for wildlife. Our early morning boat safari embarked and only after 5 minutes on the river we were confronted with 8 boats tied up to a sleeping male adult jaguar under a tree. It looked as though it had a really good recent meal, with a full belly. Realising it was going to be a long wait to see it move so off we set to a nearby channel where we were amused by 8 giant otters constantly gorging themselves on fish & noisily communicating between themselves. After photographing a colony of Yellow-rumped cacique we set off to explore yet another narrow channel. Discovering a greater kiskadee nest as well as a Sepia crowned flycatchers` in an old tree stump. At the same location above us stood a young
Rufescent tiger heron dwarfed by its parent on their nest. Continuing up the channel we found Rusty-collared seed eater and Rufous-tailed jacamar. We had come to the end of the channel and headed back the 500m back to where the bids had been seen. However before reaching the spot we came across a one eyed Jaguar known locally as “Mick Jaguar”. He awoke and proceeded to entertain for an hour hunting along the margins diving in after Capybara and iguanas. Swimming in front of us, everything, a real show. In the afternoon we started where we left this time down one of the major rivers and in no time found another Jaguar asleep under a tree by a beach in the bend of the river. We left to find a single hunting otter as well as a few Yucare with watching Pied plover and Both species of tern and skimmer. Soon we came across another sandy beach which presented us with one our target species a 2 m long Yellow Anaconda. On our return the Jaguar was still there started to wake yawned and went back to sleep. We left it at 1750 in the dark returning to a setting sunset with Little and Banded nighthawks flying around us finding a Tree frog who had hitched a lift in the boat, a Great day.

Friday Sept 26th

Still moored on the river by the three brothers rivers junction the day started quiet with one Giant otter or were we getting used to the wealth of wildlife then at 0845 we came across a male Jaguar hunting for 30 minutes on the channel side after this amazing session it wandered off into the Pantanaria. While this had been going on Capped heron and Snail kites perched and watched the goings on. The afternoon session was straight into a Large group of boisterous nesting Giant otters that dug a hole out in sandy bank while being watched by many big feeding Yucare. Then we went chasing a Jaguar sighting, no luck. Continuing exploring the water channels finding Forest elaenia and Orange troupial. Nearly back at our houseboat saw we came across a circus of boats, watching a stalking young jaguar eventually killing a Cayman in the twilight right in front of us.

Saturday Sept 27th

Set off up the Picare river to a local ranch. A very good location, birds in transit included 6 Toco toucan and on a nearby beach Sun bittern with 2 Grey necked rail. Guans of both species bellowed out. Arriving at the lodge we walked up the garden path to be confronted with a flock of 40 Caracara and 12 Hyacinth macaws flying around the grounds, There was a nesting colony of Caciques with Giant & shiny cowbirds, Sayaca Palm tanagers. Parakeets were noisy in the tops with passing over head Fork-tailed flycatchers. We waited by the ranch to see Saffron finches with Bay backed tanager and Little woodpecker. In the same area there were 2 Agoutis feeding in the open with 3 Bare-faced Curasow. Eventually the tame 9 banded armadillo turned up at 1030 then we bade farewell & back to the Aguape, After lunch we went up one of the branches of rivers coming across a unobliging Jaguar in a bush. The families of Capybara & Southern Screamer & Buff necked ibis, female Snail kite woodpecker and many Jacamar on way back not to be done out of a decent Jaguar session we came across one on a beach till pre dusk, then negotiated the Bats & Nighthawks on the return journey.

Sunday Sept 28th

We started off in one of the many channels finding an obliging Cocoi heron with an inquisitive Tegu lizard with a Howler monkey watching on. We stopped to examine tracks of various mammals on a small beach and found a tame Plumbeous pigeon. Then on the way back we found yesterday evenings male Jaguar sat under a bush watching over the long beach for Capybara. From no where, `Mick Jaguar` appeared & a small fight broke out. The young pretender being chased off .Mick then walked down the beach had a bathe and then went back to the all important watchpoint and off to sleep. Our on board lunch ensued. Afternoon's highlights were getting really close to 8 plus giant otters with a pair mating!. Managing to squeeze over the water hyacinths we disturbed a Little cuckoo and touching distance of Jacana, Donocobius, Jacamar & Silver beaked tanager. After a real close watch of Common Tody flycatcher we returned home with a brief goodbye to `Mick`.

Monday Sept 29th

Port Joffre to Cuiaba. We woke up moored opposite Port Joffre. After breakfast, ourselves andluggage crossed the river to the waiting transport. This proved to be an open topped lorry. I sat on the back, a bit bumpy. It took 6 hours to get to Pouso Alegre. The highlights as we travelled north was a Great horned owl, sat out in the open by the road and as we photographed that a Maguari stork was in an open field on the opposite side. White headed marsh tyrants made appearances as well as the full range of commoner herons, egrets and birds of prey. Also some very obliging Red brocket deer. We arrived 1350 at the ranch but unfortunately they had finished for lunch. By the front porch there was a Red crested cardinal nesting. Hyacinth macaws flew around the ranch and we were also lucky to find a Little wood pecker and then a Large Linneated woodpecker at its nest. Off we set for lunch at a more upmarket well equipped ranch Rio claro. On the way there we stopped at the pools by the track out and got good images of Sun bittern and Capped heron and the final pool a bathing Tapir. After the buffet we had Nanday parakeets, Narrow-billed wood creeper, Saffron finch and Palm tanager. After dropping people back off at Pouso Alegre our final leg via a final ranch to Cuiaba just out of the transpantaneria. Here we had a Rhea nursery by the road and a flock of White woodpecker with also an obliging Crab eating fox.

Wednesday Oct 1st

La Poussada ranch day. The 2.5 hr drive from Cuiaba was accompanied by Saaay a Peruvian bird guide who was invaluable. The journey was along an amazing busy road, nose to tail Lorries mostly carrying Soya from the west of the country. Entering the valley end via a quarry we immediateley saw White-eared puffbird and a Swallow-tailed kite flew overhead with Plumbeous kites. Our main reason was a long standing Harpy eagle family that was last seen 2 days prior to us going. We weren`t lucky. However around the ranch there were Whistling heron and parakeets. The local pond had White faced whistling duck, Least grebe and Burrowing owl. We had 2 forest trail walks finding a Pauraque nest as well as seeing Scarlet green macaws, Laughing falcon, Brown Jacamar, & Blue crowned Motmot. We were treated to a buffet here in pleasant surroundings including a swimming pool! Afternoon included the climb of a tower above a steep rock face. Being above the canopy we were eye to eye with Bare faced fruit crow, Black-tailed Tityra, Blue headed parrots, & Rufous-winged flycatchers. This final session finished for one last look for the eagles but we did manage superb views of a flock of Yellow-tufted woodpeckers in the same bare tree as a Lettered aracari & 4 Scarlet green macaws. In the evening we had a superb meal back at Cuiaba on its main street, back to our hotel and the long journey back to the UK, negotiating half open badly run Sao Paulo airport. Many thanks to Carlos and everyone at Pantanal Eco explorer for patience and hard work.
