The Brecks or Breckland is a specialist habitat around Thetford forest which contains some highly sought after species. The primary targets are Goshawk, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch.
We will spend the first couple of hours looking for the woodpeckers and other forest birds. Then moving on we head to the Goshawk view point and hope to catch a display of up to 4 birds. We usually also see Crossbills and Woodlark at this spot. Moving on we stop for lunch where we will also look for Firecrest. After lunch we finish at another forest spot to look for Hawfinch, where we have in the past seen up to 18 birds.
It is also possible to do a two day tour which will increase your chances of seeing all of the above species and look for the highly secretive and rare Golden Pheasant and localised Willow Tit. There may also be an early Stone Curlew or an over wintering Great Grey Shrike available.
Accommodation can be booked for one, two or three nights at a hotel close to the action. We normally try to start by 8.30am as the woodpeckers are early risers. The tours usually finish around 4pm or a bit earlier if we have been successful with all the target species.
