Sketching birds on the marshes of Doñana and Odiel, Spain

Juan Varela

Juan Varela Simó is a Spanish biologist and wildlife artist. He has a Masters in Animal Behaviour, a Director of SEO/BirdLife and is co-founder and Board member of the Mediterranean Seabird Association.

His paintings of wildlife have illustrated more than 40 books, magazines and newspapers including the best seller Birds of Spain. He received one of the 2001 National Environment Awards, given by the Spanish government and his work has been selected by the jury of Birds in Art (Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wisconsin). He has participated in several art and conservation projects of the Artists for Nature Foundation for which he is the official representative in Spain. His work has been shown in more than 40 museums and galleries across Spain, France, Holland, UK, Israel and USA. As an art teacher he has contributed to the development and interest of Wildlife Art in Spain. We are delighted to exhibit work from his birding sketchbooks at surfbirds.

The following images are part of those produced for the book Between Sea and Land a travelog and sketchbook on the litoral marshes of Doñana and Odiel in southern Spain. The great part of them were done on site during the years of 2008 and 2009.
