My computer died and I am using my husband's old, partially crippled one. I had some photos on it from the Med. The batch I'm posting came from the Vatican. I thought the paintings were interesting. A few were obvious (#3 ;))as to what they were, but others were a bit stylized. What's your take?

Round two. I thought #4 was interesting. Wallcreeper and a Woody? Strange combo.

First set easier than second: Goldfinch, Starling, Hoopoe, Chaffinch.

Second set: first two don't know (made up?); three poss Goldcrest; four looks like Wallcreeper and Goldcrest; then Woodchat Shrike attacking House Martin

Starling for Number 2 in the first set? That makes sense. I was stuck on Blackbird.
We are down to one computer on board and while I was uploading the pictures, my husband was breathing down my neck waiting for the computer :) and I didn't realize till just now that I missed a set. Two of photos are pertinent to some already posted. The reason I thought the bird with the Wallcreeper was a Green Woody was because of #1 in this set. Also, I thought #3 in the second set was a green woody. I can just see a moustache. Does # 2show the Woodchat Shrike being an aggressive mate rather than attacking? Sorry this one didn't go up with the other, Brian. #3 shows house martin?
Did anyone notice the creepy, ghostly human watching the Woodchat Shrike(s) in the first WCShrike photo? (#5 in set 2)
The best I could do with #4 here is Kingfisher.

Second set: first two don't know (made up?);

First bird (2nd set) has quite deliberate wing markings - maybe Greenfinch? Second pic could be made up, or maybe something like Nightingale, or maybe Skylark?

In your last batch you have 1) Green Woodpecker, 2) Woodchat Shrike on hirundine or Dunnock, 3) House Martins and 4) Common Kingfisher

In Round Two, you have 1) finch-type, 2) Skylark with unknown, 3) Not European, 4) Wallcreeper with Goldcrest! and 5) Woodchat Shrike on House Martin

Round One as listed by Brian, although the male Chaffinch could have been a bit more accurately portrayed !

With the Chaffinch in mind, number 1 in Round 2 is almost certainly supposed to be a male Common Greenfinch

By the way Sue, are old plates like this worth anything, as I am forever seeing plates similar to this at boot sales, especially at the Tetsworth one in rural Oxfordshire

I thought Nightengale on 2 also. I think #4 on first set and #1 on second set are the same bird.

Pass ! Psittacids of some species or another, the male perhaps supposedly a Red and Yellow Macaw but more likely an Amazonian Parrot species. Alex is your man for that one !

Hi Lee,
Well, I'm sort of glad the Woodchat Shrike wasn't an agrressive Beast! I didn't realize they went after such large birds.
The 'plates' are actually paintings on the wall in one of the rooms in the Vatican museum.

I was thinking an Amazonian and a Macaw. I just thought it was amazing to find all these bird paintings in a Vatican museum. In Ephesus, Turkey, there were bird murals in the ruins that were being excavated. Some were obviously pigeons! I thought it was neat that nature was so well represented in the ancient homes. I also thought that if I ever get home, I'm going to have a few birds painted on my walls.

I love this one.

Bird on the right is a Red and Green Macaw. Other one is probably one of the species of green macaws.

Makes you wonder how many new world birds died being taken back as curiosities.

This is one of the Ephesus frescoes. The terraced houses that it comes from date from 1c BC and were used as residences until 7c AD. I like the fanciful pose of carrying a flower. I guess many of us have always been drawn to birds.
