A REDWING was discovered on November 15, 2011 and documented with photos on November 16th in Seward, Alaska. This is a new State Record for Alaska. Birders flocked to the beach on November 17th from Fairbanks, Anchorage, Homer, Kenai, Soldotna and Seward. More birders, including at least one from Kodiak, are expected in the following days.
The Redwing was first observed feeding in the seaweed at the tideline at the beach like the Northwestern crows and Magpies. Subsequently it was observed near the houses by the beach, feeding on Mt Ash berries both in the trees and on the ground, and sheltering in the small spruce trees.
The north northwest winds have been brutal the past several days with temperatures in the low teens. It's a wonder this bird has survived after its long voyage from Eurasia.
