This looks like Sanderling but it was little bigger and darker. Which Sandpiper is it?

Hello Thomas,
I am not one to extend threads by continuing to agree with what others have already agreed with, but I do think it would be useful if respondents stated their reasons for an I.D.
In the very simplest terms this is a Black-bellied Plover because the legs are too long and the bill too short (in proportion to the overall size of the bird) for Sanderling - if you look at both in a field guide or on-line images you will see what I mean. Also, if you saw the bird fly, the black axillaries (dark "armpits") are a clincher.
Regards,
Colin
