Dearl Folk,
having juts found in Sharm el Sheik a Gallinago stenura/megala I wonder if anybody could help me suggesting if any available recordings of the calls of both species.
The bird we saw weree calling 2-3 times in a row any time it took flight, in a kind of veeek, veek veek, or sneik, sneiiik, sneik.... quite harsh and penetrating but less loud and high picthed than Common Snipe....
all the characters point to megala but they are all considered variable... (rectrices not seen well enough)
thanks
Andrea
PS. may be I can poist photos when I got them from the other birders I was guiding there....

Ciao Andrea,
My experience is based on one positive stenura I ringed in Israel, several megala / stenura in Israel which were seen only in the field but could not be identified (though most probably were stenura), and quite many of both species in Asia.
Even though most birds give rather typical calls, and the call you describe do fit better with megala, the 1998 stenura I ringed gave very similar calls to what is described for megala. In fact, in the field it looked very heavy-breasted and pretty dusky. So in the bottom line, it seems that it is impossible to ID vagrants in the WP....
A great find nevertheless - I'd be very interested to see images of the bird.

Ciao Yoav and thanks for the reply...
I read about the israeli records you and big friend Rami and Barak et al. have done...
I was already prone to think they are not identifiable...but usually I do not give up easely and will go to TRINg museum to check all the skins hunting for new characters... there should be some or one at least!
For example I'm wondering about colour and tone ofthe crown and lenght of the crown stripe!
Also, what about feet projection?
Well, we will see....
Waiting for the photos from the birders there with me (I was leading a 30people group for SKUA Travel company and have no time to take pictures myself :-(

stenura and megala calls here but I don't have sound on my computer so I can't check if they work. Great find anyway (ma non soddisfacente come un Rondone Indiano a Lampedusa!)

here you are one, if you enlarge the imagine you'll barely see some of the outer tail pin feathers even if they seems to be fewer than they shoudl be in piuntail and thus mpore pro megala...
also, in the field they looked not so numerous as in stenura...
but the feet projection was very obvious, the bill a bit longer than I thought for stenura, quite pot bellied, roundish wing tip but less than great snipe, a bit smaller than the great snipe close by, and also than common snipe, very dark underwing, much more evident pale wing oval panel over upperwing than in this photo, you'll see in the other coming better etc...
all in all??!!! very crazy one....

Hi Andrea
I haven't knowingly heard a Swinhoe's Snipe but I used to see/flush Pintail Snipe on an almost daily basis over an 18-month period. Pintail pretty much always called on flushing, often in a series but occasionally singly - a call similar to Common but lower-pitched and with a slightly different quality perhaps best described as less forceful. The shortish bill usually seemed clear in the field. I have heard of Pintail giving a short but high-pitched call on occasion.
As I said, I'm not familliar with Swinhoe's, probably having overlooked many. I have been told that they may not call on flushing and if they do it is usually singly and much weaker/plainer than a Common Snipe?
