Shot this one today but can´t find it in my books. At least I can´t be sure. And yes I did order the Collins  but I still haven´t received it.

Tawny Pipit Bert, I think it might be a juvenile.

Absolutely, without doubt a Woodlark.

Clearly a Woodlark to me

Me to.
Note short tail and long supercilium. We don´t see the vide pale tips to the dark primary coverts propely but it´s surely hinted.

I do not see Woodlark at all with this bird.

Well I think it is Tawny Pipit, seen a few but I dont think it is a Woodlark (see plenty of them)

Agree it is 100% woodlark

The long primary projection beyond the tertials means that it's impossible for this bird to be a Tawny Pipit. It's a Woodlark.

Apart from what´s been said - note structure, the billshape and colour apart from that a juvenile Tawny or a Woodlark for that matter (making it an adult worn Woodlark), at this time of year would be perfectly fresh, or nearby so.

I think you're wrong there, JanJ - adult and juv Woodlarks both undergo complete summer moult, so both will be moulting at the moment (first broods juvs at least). Only examination of wear on feathers being dropped would separate them on age.

The bird is definitely moulting, as it seems to have dropped all/most of the median coverts (quills visible on the greater coverts). This wouldn't rule out a Tawny Pipit either though, as adults have complete summer moult and juvs have partial (probably involving some wing coverts and tail).

But it's not a Tawny Pipit anyway ;)

Hi there,
Woodlark 100 % with black alula, short tail with lack of bright white outer tail feathers and nothing like Tawny Pipit!
Tawny Pipits are breeding now with young in the nest near the Loire estuary and I think Woodlarks there are now in the plumage like this Woodlark!
Kind regards a P pit spotter noting their weepeckers which are thinner than this stubby billed lark having a lark which is no p pit!

I now have mixed feeling about this bird (after seeing many Tawny Pipits, both adults and juvs., and a small group of four Woodlark today).

I am certainly not 100% convinced that it is Woodlark. My original impression was that the posture was odd for Tawny but that it was crouched and if it "stood to attention" it would transform into a tall, lanky Tawny Pipit. I also could not see the super joining at the nape, nor could I be certain about where the primary tips actually were in this shot.

Don't forget that we have had some poor images of "dodgy" birds on here of late about which members have said "it is definitely...", and as I said in the thread on "Tern I.D." we should show more caution about being too emphatic on the basis of one rather poor image.

But, it is only a game (to me, anyway ).

Hi there,
Woodlark 100 % with black alula, .....

What you take to be the alula is just a shadow.

That Bill looks like Tawny Pipt and to me it is a game. Of course if I reached the BBRC I may be more critical. in the digital age the camera can lie.

I can be emphatic about this - it's a Wood Lark.

Enlighten me please Ben, I'm not one for doing masses of fora.

Oh, and for what it's worth: Woodlark.

Emphatically wrong though, lol.

Thank you all for your comments. I think it is democratically decided that it is a woodlark.

Bert,

Was this the only shot you managed to get of this bird? Also, what sort of habitat was it in (any "scenic" photos of the general area?).

Colin,

Just went outside and shot some photos.

It was sitting on a dead cork-oak in a field of dead flowers.

Here are the photos. The dead cork-oak is the one the bird sat on.

Gives you a look at our property as well.

Thank you for the response and the wonderful "environmental" shots. Much as I hate to admit it, this is perfect Woodlark habitat in Portugal.
