Hi everyone, I was just wondering if any of you have experience with Yelkouan Shearwater, never seen one myself, but there was a message of a probable one past Gwennap head this morning,
I would like to learn more about this particular species,
Many thanks
Michael

I've seen them in the eastern Med, but wouldn't say I paid that much attention, to actually learn something try Martin Garner's article on the identification of the species on the Birdguides webzine (http://www.birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp?a=558) (there are various others published in popular bird journals), the Birdlife Project (http://www.lifeshearwaterproject.org.mt/en/view.aspx?id=143) and the paper by Karen Bourgeois and Eric Vidal 'The endemic Mediterranean yelkouan shearwater Puffinus yelkouan: distribution, threats and a plea for more data' [attached].

To date, there is only one acceptable Yelkouan Shearwater record in Britain - that of a bird that flew past Berry Head, South Devon, in 2008. Documented by Mike Langman. There have been at least 15 other claims.
With Balearic Shearwater being so particularly variable, identifying Yelkouan on a seawatch is extremely difficult in a British context.
