The 49th Supplement to the AOU Check-list of North American birds is now
available:
http://aou.org/checklist/suppl/AOU_checklist_suppl_49.pdf
Here are some interesting changes:
Flamingos are now placed immediately after the grebes (Podicipediformes) in the check-list sequence and Old World Phoenicopterus roseus is split from
New World Ph. ruber; the latter is now called American Flamingo.
Herring Gull - proposal to split smithsonianus and vegae from argentatus did not pass muster
Latin name of following gulls
Chroicocephalus philadelphia Bonaparte’s Gull
Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus Gray-hoodedGull
Chroicocephalus ridibundus Black-headedGull
Also, several New World thrushes in the genus Turdus
that were formerly called "robin" (eg Clay-colored and White-throated) are now called "thrush". However, Rufous-backed Robin along with American Robin are excluded.
Any thoughts or complaints?
