My husband and I went to Cliveden House near Maidenhead recently and saw this bird in the trees. At first we thought it must be a type of woodpecker, however I now realise it isn't. Have looked through all the books and tried the identifier but still don't know what it is. Can anyone help me as I'm feeling rather frustrated! Sorry about the picture quality!

Certainly a Jay - which books (field-guides) are you looking at, and what is "the identifier"?

Must be a dirty fat jay! Compared to the pictures I've looked at!!! The identifier is here: http://surfbirds.com/ukbirdid.html

Thanks again!

Interestingly (!) I could not get a picture of a Jay to come up , no matter what combination of Jay colours I put in ! Got Red backed Shrike and Corncrake quite a few times !

Better to stick with a field guide like Collins etc ;-)
