Sunday 23rd August . 2009

An early trip down to Berry Head in South Devon today for a seawatch but it turned out to be very poor with only the following birds seen . 10 FULMAR , 20+ GANNET , 20+ KITTIWAKE , 6 MANX SHEARWATER , 2 BALEARIC SHEARWATER , 1 ARCTIC SKUA , 60+ COMMON TERN , 2 SANDWICH TERN & 2 BLACK TERN .
On the walk back up the hill the following butterfly were seen , 2 Wall Brown , 20+ Painted Lady & a Clouded Yellow .

Bowling Green Marsh

I went down to the Bowling Green Marsh in Topsham early this morning & saw the GARGANEY that has been there for a while now ( but the light was not very good for photo`s ) & a GREEN SANDPIPER .
Much later in the day I went down again for another look & a look off of the viewing platform at the Clyst Estuary got me my first RUFF of the year , I then went back for a look at the marsh & saw a BARNACLE GOOSE , 3 GREENSHANK , 2 WHIMBREL , a SPOTTED REDSHANK & a very nice WOOD SANDPIPER .

Great White Egret

Brian Heasman & myself made the journey up to Chard Reservoir in Somerset this morning to look for a GREAT WHITE EGRET that has been there for a few days & after getting lost we did finally find the reservoir ! a place that I have never been before & it was a lot better than I expected with quite a lot of mud around the edges .
The egret was showing very well along with 4 COMMON SANDPIPER , a juvenile SPOTTED REDSHANK & a KINGFISHER .

California Trip

I have recently come back from a two week trip to California where I birded the desert , mountains & the Salton Sea , I did try to upload some shots before but had trouble with my blog , the weather over there was blistering with a couple of days well over 120 .

There was 7 GREEN SANDPIPER on the Matford Pools just outside of Exeter today & about a dozen SWALLOW hawking over the pools , but besides that it was dead !
