South View, Polesworth, Warwickshire
An early morning surprise was being woken up by a calling Red-legged Partridge sitting on top of my roof! A trio of birds then pecked around the feeding station briefly before running off up the lane. Also around the feeders today were up to four Bullfinch and a female Great Spotted Woodpecker as well as the more usual stuff.
Cattle Egrets Breed In Britain!
News filtered through today that a pair of Cattle Egrets have bred this year at an undisclosed site in Somerset. They managed to successfully raise a single chick in a mixed Grey Heron and Little Egret colony. I also found out that a pair of Purple Herons built a nest last year at Minsmere RSPB, Suffolk. Unfortunately the nest was washed away by the freak floods that occurred last June.
