Alvecote Pools SSSI

Today I attempted to call the Enviromnent Agency regarding the 'poisoned' state of Gilman's Pool.  As outlined in my previous blog it seems as though all fish in this particular lake have been killed.  I have heard various rumours regarding what is to blame from the lake being stocked with diseased fish from other pools to the lilly-pads in the pool being sprayed with some kind of herbicide!  Either way the result is that all birds have disappeared, fish are dead or dying and I assume the amphibians and dragonfly larvae have suffered the same fate.  It's all pretty depressing especially as the so-called Environment Agency did not seem concerned as the pool is technically a private stretch of waterway.  Does this mean that owners of private fisheries can do whatever they want with them?  If anyone reading can help me out with some advice on where to go next I'd be very grateful.

Anyway birds around the SSSI included the juvenile Little Ringed Plover still on Anker Flashes and a good number of Common Tern around Mill Pool and Pretty Pigs Pool.  As the weather wasn't too good I failed to photograph any Grass Snakes.  Along Linden Lane a Red Fox was spotted hunting in a recently harvested wheat field.

Get in touch with Natural England. Concern would be required if the pools were being sprayed with herbicide.
