Saturday 3rd October 2009

The 'suicidal brothers' Jules Allen and Tom Perrins took pity on me today and kindly escorted me around various sites in Warwickshire.  I say 'suicidal brothers' because for the second year running they chose the wrong week to spend on Shetland.  As you are all aware it has all kicked off in the Northern Isles over the past week or so but unfortunately for them they were there the week before.... their best bird ARCTIC WARBLER!  Anyway they did me a real favour today as I shuffled around like a pensioner.  My imobility is down to a serious football injury I sustained during the week.  I wasn't actually playing though, I heard on the TV that Wolfsberg had taken the lead against Manchester United.  As I stood up in the bath to listen what had happened I slipped, flipped a few feet into the air and landed with a smash ramming my right knee through the bath.  I then spun around, banged my head on the tiled wall and knocked myself out for a few seconds.  As I came around all I could see was blood and bubbles and a flooded bathroom floor.  A trip to the hospital resulted in a stitched up knee and a diagnosis of a cracked rib and mild concussion!

LESSER SCAUP at Draycote Water, Warwickshire

At a choppy Draycote early this afternoon the eclipse male LESSER SCAUP was quickly picked out amongst the 120 Tufted Duck that bobbed up and down in Toft Bay.  With not a great deal else to look at we then headed over to Shustoke Reservoir where a nice adult Arctic Tern was feeding well in the blustery conditions.  The final trip of the day was to Ladywalk WMBC Reserve .  Unfortunately there was no sign of the elusive Spotted Crake but a Goosander, a Green Sandpiper and a scattering of Common Snipe were nice to see.

Whilst I hope your injuries aren't too painful and heal soon I can't help but feel this is the God of football meting out punishment for yet another supporter of Not My Local Team Utd. The rest of us have to endure pain throughout the year (but with the exciting news that today my lot finally escaped the curse of minus points).

Get well soon
Steve

Arch Responds: You'll be pleased to know Steve that I'm a long suffering Tamworth FC fan too (my local team), in fact I watch the mighty Lambs live more than United these days.... still love UNITED though.... and CELTIC.... & FC United of Manchester.

PS: Are you a Portsmouth fan? :o)

HOW DARE YOU!!!

Frustrating thing is we finally get the points needed to get above them and they go and pull a win out of the bag against some Midland team or other.
Been to Tamworth's ground! Many many moons ago in my Fareham Town supporting days (we're talking the 80s now).

Envious of your Scottish allegiance. For some reason I have not yet been able to fathom I have for some considerable time been a devoted Ayr United fan. One day I'll fulfil my ambition to see them play.

About Me

Aye up folks! My name is Adam 'Archie' Archer, a birder from the West Midlands of England where the birds maybe slightly sh*te but the birders are among the best in the World. This is simply a blog about my birding experiences from my beloved Isles of Great Britain. I have been fortunate to see many great birding spectacles from Unst at the highest tip of Shetland to pelagic trips off the coast of the Isles of Scilly. I have also included sightings from around my home in North Warwickshire and my local patch Alvecote Pools a Site of Special Scientific Interest that straddles the Warwickshire & Staffordshire borders. Birding is a great hobby.... so please relax, smile & enjoy it. WARNING: SOME CONTENT MAY OFFEND! PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY COMMENTS LEFT ON THIS BLOG ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE VIEWS OF MY GOODSELF.... SO THERE!
