Isles of Scilly United 2 Shetland Rangers 1

The Rangers pulled a goal back today after a 1st winter TAIGA FLYCATCHER was identified on the Isle of Fetlar.  The actual bird has been present since the 22nd September but was thought to be just a Red-breasted Flycatcher.  Unfortunately for my birding associates Tom Perrins and Julian Allen they had not visited Fetlar during their Shetland trip last week so they were understandably gutted upon hearing the news of this bird as they waited for a flight home at Glasgow airport.  Never mind lads there will be others.

TAIGA FLYCATCHER in Britain

If accepted this recent Shetland record will be just the third sighting of this species in Great Britain.  The first record came on the 26th April 2003 when a stunning 1st summer male TAIGA FLYCATCHER turned up at Flamborough, Yorkshire.  I eventually caught up with this bird on its final day on the 29th April 2003 when I relocated the bird feeding at the top of the ravine near the South Landing car park.  Later that year on the 12th October 2003 a 1st winter TAIGA FLYCATCHER was found at Dale Voe, Shetland.  This individual remained in site until the 15th October 2003.

At this time TAIGA FLYCATCHER (or Red-throated Flycatcher as it was known then) was lumped with Red-breasted Flycatcher but was eventually split as a true species by the British Ornithologist's Union during 2005.

Wednesday 30 September 2009 - Azores

Nice bird , dont know if I could have identified with confidence. I have been struggling to find Pied Fly in Wyre Forest this year! Why not add a third team to your League and will certainly get the juices going if u are doing the Scillies this year. Imagine a place where everything you potentially see you have to consult your trusty Peterson rather than your dog-eared Svensson..... The Azores - there has been a Norwegian birder on Corvo for a couple of weeks as part of his 2 month sojourn and he has been working and walking his gonads off.....

Check his blog daily - I do!

Arch Responds: Cheers Laurie, I've actually embraced the 21st Century and bought the iBird Explorer Pro application for my iPhone in time for the forthcoming Scilly trip. Imagine access to every species of bird ever to have touched down in the US, imagine having their calls and access to photographs as well as plates? OK some of the illustrations are a joke but it's a handy little tool to have and would be ideal for that chap on the Azores.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out. As for the new team name how about 'Real Azores'? :o)

Happy birding!

About Me

Aye up folks! My name is Adam 'Archie' Archer, a birder from the West Midlands of England where the birds maybe slightly sh*te but the birders are among the best in the World. This is simply a blog about my birding experiences from my beloved Isles of Great Britain. I have been fortunate to see many great birding spectacles from Unst at the highest tip of Shetland to pelagic trips off the coast of the Isles of Scilly. I have also included sightings from around my home in North Warwickshire and my local patch Alvecote Pools a Site of Special Scientific Interest that straddles the Warwickshire & Staffordshire borders. Birding is a great hobby.... so please relax, smile & enjoy it. WARNING: SOME CONTENT MAY OFFEND! PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY COMMENTS LEFT ON THIS BLOG ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE VIEWS OF MY GOODSELF.... SO THERE!
