After spendng just over 4 hours at Farlington Marshes waiting patiently for the Spotted Crake it finally showed giving excellent views. During this time we enjoyed a strange looking Ruff, 20+ Greenshank, a few Spotted Redshank, Water Rails chasing each other and a swooping female Peregrine toying with the gulls and the waders on the lagoon
Birds aside the weekend was perfect for my newly acquired moth trap. In all I had about 25 species (identified !) of about 60+ moths. Some have yet to be identified, many got away. I have added some pictures of the better looking moths including my highlight so far, on my first night, a Poplar Hawkmoth.
Poplar Hawkmoth, Portsdown Hill 8th August 2009
Scorched Carpet, Portsdown Hill 9th August 2009
Marbled Beauty, Portsdown Hill, 9th August 2009
Canary-shouldered Thorn, Portsdown Hill, 10th August 2009
Garden Tiger, Portsdown Hill, 10th August 2009
As this is a bird log I will only post the rare or particularly smart moths from now on.
