BELVIDE BIRDING

• Sunday, August 31, 2008 - Belvide Foggy Start then patchy Rain W 2

The first 2 hours this morning was spent sat in the hide looking at fog. Finally it lifted at 0930 to reveal the 2 juvenile Black-necked Grebe, also another Tree Pipit flew over to the east at 0825. 3 Greenshank were new arrivals also 1 Ruff, 6 Ringed Plover and 2 Common Sandpiper were present. 2 adult Common Tern were present and Wigeon have increased to 5.

At around 1030am I received a phone call to say that there was a juvenile Sabine's Gull (photo) at Westport Lake in Stoke on Trent. This was a Staffs tick for me having missed the last twitchable bird at Blithfield back in 1996. Thankfully Kevin Clements gave me a lift and on arrival the bird was showing very well down to 20yards on the smaller adjacent lake. This I think is the 9th record for Staffordshire.
