      Lovely shot of, for me, a very unusual bird. Looked it up in my guide and find that is VERY local but with a wider range than the Red-knobbed Coot.
      The beak size is very heavy looking and probly the red colouring makes it look more so.

      This is also called Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio). It is under rare species in the DK RSPB Birds of Britain and Europe.

      I agree it's a beautiful looking bird, particularly with the sun on it, and I agree that the "swamp hen" name sounds awful. My books call it Gallinule. My wife failed to get her tongue round this to start with and kept calling it "Galliano". We both know what she's talking about, and I think it sounds great!
