These sparrows were singing loudly in this area where the sandy soil supported scrub oaks and stunted pitch pines. This is the only place we
encountered this declining species on our recent visit to Cape Cod.
Two subspecies are usually recognized. This is the nominate Eastern race in which the rusty patch of the face is relatively broad as seen here.
