This is another abundant widespread species. They often associate with
Blue-gray Tanagers and have even hybridized with them. However, at El
Valle, Palm Tanagers were much less common than Blue-grays.

Four subspecies are recognized. T. p. atripennis ranges from Nicaragua to
northwest South America. Races vary in overall color, some being quite
blackish, others bluish below. Atripennis is fairly pale without much
color on the underparts. The black wingtips are a good field mark, if you
can see them.

The white necklace on this bird is reflected light on the shiny breast
feathers.
