This small, wary kingfisher inhabits streams and quiet pools from Texas
through northern Chile. Five subspecies are currently recognized. This
one is the race C. a. septentrionalis which ranges from central Texas to
northern South America. It is a large-billed race with moderate white
spotting on the wing and a rather pure green coloration on the upperparts.
This is a female which lacks chestnut on the underparts. I will post a
photo of a male later.
