This is a female. Both sexes normally have the abdomen red in color, but
this individual shows orange on one side of the belly. This pigment
aberration is sometimes called xanthochroism (also called xanthochromism or
xanthism). It can have a number of causes, one of which is diet.
The former Massena Trogon of Middle America and Chapman's Trogon of
adjacent South America have been lumped into the Slaty-tailed Trogon. This
race (T. m. hoffmanni) ranges from Costa Rica through Panama. It differs
from nominate birds which range from Mexico to Nicaragua by its smaller
size.
