      The purple throat often looks black in poor light and females lack the
      throat patch. Males extend the colored gorget during displays. This
      unique bird is in the Cotinga family. This individual was part of a small
      flock. Their shape, size and overall plumage reminded me of the Lewis's
      Woodpecker of North America.
