Taken at Parque Ambiental, Vilamoura, Portugal, 12th March 2009.
The males take up this posture frequently during the nesting process. With their wings extended like this, they swing the head and upper body vigorously from side to side for 5 or 6 seconds. I'm guessing that this is some sort of territorial defence display?

A brilliant photo Ken. Congratulations.
I was watching the same bird recently. I witnessed the head action several times and assumed it to be the action of weaving the nest. I saw one bird 'nip off' about 4mm width off a leaf close to the nest and carry it to the nest, followed by the weaving action.

Not sure, Bernard, but I can't see any reed in their beaks when they are making this movement, and their feet are pretty stationary, so at the moment I don't see any mechanism for weaving when they are doing this. I've watched them weaving the reed into the nests, and this seems a slower, but very clever process.
