      Nice shot Peter; to be precise, this is a 1st winter Greater Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus). The "thick-necked" look and very heavy bill with pronounced gonys (the "spur" on the lower mandible) make this monster gull unmistakable.

      Thanks Colin. There had been lots of these gulls at Langstone Harbour too. They have moved off now. They are an amazing sight and the size of them, compared with the usual resident Black-headed Gulls, is incredible.
