The portrait shot is very good but I prefer this one. I have seen five Water Rails this afternoon, out in the open at the edge of a reedbed, and in full sun, but 150-200 meters away and there is no way I can get any closer. A beautiful bird and, although quite common, very difficult for many people to get a decent view. Does this bird have a ring on its right leg?
Colin
P.S. I would suggest positioning your signature much closer to the edge of the frame.

Hi John,
You did well (as usual), but in my opinion if you toned down/removed the light coloured reed sticking out of its bum, and the cross over its back, it would be exceptional!!
regards David
PS with an image of this quality, you should be able to tell us the ring no.

Thanks all.
Colin
I picked the dark bit for the signature as the normal spot at the bottom was messy.
David
yes i could take out the reed but if you mess around too much you can end up in trouble.( from people ! )
I haven't really the time to spend too much on the pics and I haven't been through all the other days shoot yet.
Cheers
John

Both of David's suggestions regarding the "bum" reed and those crossing over the bird's back are easily possible, and I even managed to make a reasonable job of removing the pale coloured dead reed in front of the bird using "clone stamp" tool.
BUT, this is a reed-bed bird and maybe we should not interfere too much with its ambience?
Colin

i think its an awsome bird and to get a "clean" image is extraordinarily difficult so i say well done john
ps and again how on earth can you resize them that small and keep them that sharp!
