AFRICA - NAMIBIA

NORTH-WESTERN NAMIBIA, EPUPA FALLS LODGE

Epupa Falls Epupa Falls Lodge

This beautiful lodge situated on the Kunene River near the magnificent Epupa Falls, it is the ideal location from which to explore this remote and pristine region. Epupa Falls Lodge consists of nine luxury safari-style tents erected on stone platforms, each with two single beds and en-suite bathroom. All tents have electricity and mosquito netting and an outside, shaded balcony overlooking the tranquil Kunene River. Large makalani palms overhead provide welcome shade from the midday sun.

While many of the big game were sadly killed during the independence war, particularly elephants, rhinos, and hippos, these charismatic creatures, including the fascinating desert elephants, are slowly returning to the region. Other animals includes kudu, zebra, baboons, black-faced impala, crocodiles, and porcupines.

The Kunene river also enjoys a rich bird life. More than 240 different bird species have been counted so far, of which about 10 are endemic to the region. The charming cape otter resides close to the dining area, on the other side of the river, and crocodiles are often seen basking in the sun (but prevented by the steep river banks from entering the lodge area).

NAMIB DESERT, WOLWEDANS CAMPS

Boulders Wolwedans

Located in the heart of NamibRand Nature Reserve, Wolwedans nestles into the dunes and is set against a backdrop of extraordinary natural beauty. Wolwedans' camps provide the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of awe-inspiring and undisturbed nature.

The NamibRand Nature Reserve, located in southern Namibia, has been established to help protect and conserve the unique ecology and wildlife of the south-west Namib Desert. Conserving the pro-Namib, the area along the eastern edge of the Namib Desert, is critically important in order to facilitate seasonal migratory wildlife routes and to protect biodiversity.

The NamibRand Nature Reserve is probably the largest nature reserve in Southern Africa, extending over an area of 172,200 ha. The Reserve shares a 100km border with the Namib-Naukluft National Park in the west and is bordered in the east by the imposing Nubib Mountains. Virtually all facets of the Namib Desert are represented on the Reserve – sand and gravel plains and stretches of savannah alternate with mountain ranges and vegetated dune belts.

Birders have a choice of the rustic, but unique comfort of the Dune Camp, the more elaborate Dunes Lodge and Mountain View Suite, the quietly secluded Private Camp or Wolwedans' latest gem, Boulders Camp, secretly tucked away amidst the grandeur of large granite rocks.

The Dunes Lodge is perched on top of a dune plateau, overlooking panoramic vistas in all directions and capturing the beauty of the desert in a most memorable way. The lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building.

Boulders Camp is situated 45 kilometres south of Wolwedans and hugged by massive granite rocks. Sleeping a maximum of eight guests in four spacious tents, Boulders is undoubtedly the most exclusive camp at Wolwedans.
