At their base lies a different riverine ecosystem on the banks of two major rivers, the Ewaso N'giro and the Engare Narok.

Accommodation at Loisaba is luxurious and authentically African. Whether you choose to stay at Loisaba Lodge, The House or The Cottage, birders will experience the atmosphere and energy of wild Africa.

The wilderness is a haven for more than 260 species of birds and 50 species of wildlife. Alongside all the more usual types, elephant, buffalo, grevy zebra and greater kudu abound; the area is also rapidly gaining a reputation for exceptional big cat sightings. Even wild dog, now appear to be re-colonising Laikipia.

KIPUNGAMI, LAMU

Kipungami, Lamu

Kipungami Lamu is a secluded barefoot retreat on the ancient Arabian island of Lamu off north-eastern Kenya. Kipiungani is regarded by many people as the most exotic, romantic coastal hideaway on the entire East African coast.

12 spacious bandas sit at one end of Kipungani Bay, shaded by the palm trees that line the 600-metre beachfront. The bandas are constructed entirely from local materials, with mkeka palm floors, makuti thatch roofs and giant king-size beds and furniture all handmade from local mangrove and palm woods. Each banda has an ocean-facing veranda.

Try snorkelling and swimming with "Africa's friendliest dolphins" on the reefs of Kinyika and Manda Toto. Sailing and sunset cruises aboard Arab dhows. Barracuda and deep sea game fishing. Bird walks around the property and beach dunes. Visits to Lamu's historic mosques, markets and museums.

Heritage Hotels' Kipungani Lamu, Kenya has been described in the press recently as 'the most laid-back lodge in Africa' and her bandas as 'some of the most glamorous beach huts in the world'.
