bird picture - Black Skimmer

"This Black Skimmer, Colorado's first, was found on the 19th of July while Duane Nelson was conducting research on Piping Plovers and Least Terns. Amazingly, this is the third time Duane has found a first-state record while working with plovers and terns in Kiowa County, Colorado.

In recent years, the large reservoirs in Kiowa County have produced some of the finest summer rarities in Colorado including the state's first Royal Tern and Curlew Sandpiper. In addition to the skimmer, this area is currently hosting Laughing and Great Black-backed gulls and a very rare inland white-morph Reddish Egret (image below with Great Egret)."

"Groove-billed Ani, Green Bay WI. The bird is frequenting a wet oldfield of willow/aspen/dogwood thickets, typical Willow Flycatcher habitat in the state. Generally the bird keeps low and often out of sight unless sunning itself on a tree branch. This is the 15th state record and the first since 1987. This is also the first summer record, the earliest previously being late August. Notice the extreme wear in the outer 2 retrices in photo below - similar wear was observed in the primaries; in this condition I wouldn't be surprised if the bird stays for a while. A lot of Wisconsin records of this species were either found dead or wound up dead, and a lot of the others were one-day wonders, all of which makes this bird pretty unique." Brian Boldt
