Birders come to South Shore in Milwaukee where one can often get close looks at Thayer's in with flocks of Ring-billed Gulls and Herring Gulls. While Thayer's is still unusual in Wisconsin in winter, it is a regular winter resident and is the third most common gull on Lake Michigan through March. This was one of the earliest South Shore adults to appear in late Oct. These four photos show all the field marks for a definitive basic adult; many birds appearing in Wisconsin in late fall are often more hooded with dark streaking on the breast. Also of interest, was the flight feather molt. John Idzikowski | ||||||||
